Dr. Stephen Walters grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. He completed his undergraduate education at Miami University of Ohio where graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. He received his M.D. at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where he was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honor society and was awarded multiple scholarships throughout his medical school training. He completed a transitional internship year at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, and then his residency training in ophthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He went on to complete a glaucoma fellowship at Columbia University in New York, where he trained with some of the most established and well-respected glaucoma specialists in the U.S.
Dr. Walters is a staff member of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Oakland University/William Beaumont School of medicine. He works closely with the residency providing lectures, staffing their glaucoma clinic, and performing both cataract and glaucoma surgeries with the residents.
Dr. Walters specializes in the clinical and surgical management of both cataract and glaucoma patients. This includes routine and complex cataract surgery as well as traditional and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, including iStent, Kahook/trabex goniotomy, XenGel Stents, and cyclophotocoagulation (G6 and micropulse) . Dr. Walters is board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Glaucoma Society (AGS). He has multiple peer-reviewed publications in various ophthalmology journals and has presented at both regional and national ophthalmology conferences/meetings.
